USSD Based Mobile Payment

Thursday, 16 May 2019 by Oded Stern
ussd-stk-money-transfer

The world and technology as we know it is rapidy changing and now things are easier than they have ever been before.  We are busy people with busy on the go lifestyles that breed the need for us to be able to access information and send messages or information almost automatically.  We are completely addicted to our smart phones and frankly, why woudn’t we be?  Smart phones have completely changed the world as we know it and now we expect everyone and everything to be at our fingertips and at our demand.  We’ve become pretty spoiled actually, but it is the way things are now and Hypermedia, has been working around the clock to make sure we can provide you the technology you need to keep running your busy life.  We intend to keep up and continue being an industry leader in technological advancements and systems to make our lives more moble, more simple, and more fun.

The way we choose to make payments these days has really changed from the way it used to be.  I remember when I was a kid, I watched my father sit at the kitchen table once or twice a month and he would open bill after bill after bill.  He’d start at the top of the stack and  would hand write out checks to each company.   Then, with care, he would put the checks in an envelope folded in the statement and adress the envelope back to the company.  He would then lick a stamp and put it on the envelope and then put that on his pile of “outgoing” mail.  Once he had done that, he would pull out his check book register and make the necessary adjustments to the bank balance in his check book.  Once he had made a note of the change in the bank balance and rebalanced the check book, he would start the process all over again and start tackling the next bill on the top of the pile.  That process lasted a couple of hours and he meticulously opened, paid, mailed, and recorded every bill and did it over and over again.  It looked like the most boring thing in the world to a little kid, but I’ll give him credit- the man paid attention to detail.  I admire him for that.

Things aren’t the way they used to be any more.  The way we pay bills and transfer money to and from our accounts is totally different now than it was back then.  Due to the technological advancements of cell phones and now smart phones, the entire enviornment has changed and the process of the way we do things is vastly different.  The way we use and transfer money is no different.  In fact, making payments mobally has come a long way!  Just a few short years ago, no one would have imagined that you could send or receive money using just a few clicks on your phone.  Thanks to the new USSD Gateways that offer USSD payment systems, all of that has changed.  Hypermedia Systems has developed THE platform for mobile payment systems that has never before seen features and is more user friendly than ever.  We have a full sql/oracle integration and we can support multi operators at any given time and multiple payments at any given time.  We have builld our system to be able to grow and scale at will so you will never have to worry about a crash or down time due to too many payment transactions going through at once.  We want our system to be simple and easy to use so we have tried to think through all of the nice features that our users would want to have.  We have built-in efficient and functional transaction status queries.  We made sure we added a top of the line queue management system and we have given our top priority to building the most robust reduncancy solutions available; so you’ll never have to worry about a glitchy system- no matter what the situation is.  We have also taken the time to build in a banking topup gateway and revolutionized the platform with our stk gateway.  Now that you have a general overview of what we are and how we operatate, let’s dive in and and we’ll give you more details.

It can be hard to understand some of the ins and outs of what we said above.  We know, we get it.  It’s a lot of techie talk and jargon that sometimes is hard to follow.  A USSD mobile payment gateway is a way to be able to send and receive funds on your phone instead of having to go to your bank, atm, kiosk or shops. You can also use the system to purchase your SIM card charges so you don’t have to keep a bunch of SIM cards laying around for use at a later date.  The previous example was just one example of how our gateway might simplify your life.  If you want to pay some bills, you don’t have to go to your bank or lick a stamp and send your check in through the mail.  With our new mobile payment gateway, everything is available on-demand when you need it.  We have helped to get rid of old paper clutter, bills, statements,  and balancing checkbooks and all of the other things you used to have to do to manage and run your household and life.  Now, everything is right in the palm of your hand and you can stay up to date at all times with your finances, bills, bank accounts, and obligations.

More specifically, some of the benefits of our system are as follows:

  • SQL/Oracle Intergration- provides our system an interaface that integrated with Oracle. That way you can browse, manage your database applications and monitor.  You can perform other Oracle tasks like use, import and export applications, have customer exception reports, tune your queries, drop applications, deploy applications and modify your applications.  You can also export pages.
  • Multiple operator supports- you never have to worry about our system crashing with too many people trying to use the application at the same time. We can grow and expand and will and have the availability to support multiple users across the globe with our bandwidth.
  • Multiple payment transactions- similar to multiple user support, we also offer multiple payment support. You can send and receive payments at the same time with no hassle and no system confusion.  We have built our system to allow for multiple actions at once.
  • We have built in a transaction status query so you never have to wonder what the status of the transaction is. That is automatically updated every few minutes to give you the most up to date information available.
  • We have a robust queue management and a priority redundancy solution in place. With increased sophistication of technology and increased frequency of use, the last thing you want is a Denial of Service (DoS) or a worm attack.  Service availbility is a crucial element for any technology and our network infrastructure is designed to give you high availability and give a source of redundancy so that you have access to the system when you need it, every time with little to no down time.
  • We offer a banking topup gateway as well. To enable rich integration between banks and our platform.  We are a top provider of prepaid and banking channels.  They are readily configured and created with our platforms interface.  Our gateway functions as a middleware component that will safely transfer money from your bank to your destination and will consider all cancellations, inquiries, or adjustments made on every transaction.

Bi-directional High Speed Communication

A USSD gateway allows bi-directional and high-speed communications to run between applications and mobile handsets.  It is giving people all over the world the speed, convenience and simple availability that has changed the way most of us live our lives.  It can support millions of users at once and makes it the ideal way for most people to access their services and accounts from abroad, the road, or home.  Our USSD gateway is cost effective, simple, and user friendly.  Our program is intuitive and the user interface is simple and appealing to look at.

So, whether you need to interact with different services like balance inquiries, bill paying, pre-paid account refilling, callback services, sports information or stats, stock quotes, games or any other possible thing you can think of, we’ve got you covered with our robust gateway.  We have an open, multi-provider platform that will allow multi-users to all get their need fulfilled at once.  Our network integrates seamlessly with all of the providers necessary to deploy a long and rich list of mobile services across different platforms.  One of the nice features about using our service is that subscribers can initiate different USSD sessions using very flexibly assigned short codes.  You can use your handheld mobile device and select from a menu or send a complete command using a single string and it will automate the request by using the USSD add-on and will satisfy all local user requirements before it sends it to the service carrier.  It does this quickly and easily.  The best part is you can automatically service any number of end users or providers using one central USSD management device.

As you can see we are just getting started with our mobile capabilities.  It is now easier than ever to send and receive payments on your phone or use any other multi use applications.   Our guarantee to you is that we will continually strive to grow and better our business even though we are already at the top in our industry.  We’re not arrogant; we are always striving to improve and are up for the challenge.  We always want to be at the top of our game, but we realize that will take continual improvement and evolution for better and faster products and services.  We are going to continue to push boundaries and improve our technological bandwidth and services so that we can provide your mobile solutions when you need them.  The world will continue to evolve and change and our lives will continue to get busier and more complex.  You can rest assured that Hypermedia will always be two steps ahead of you, paving the way to the future.

Hypermedia’s new service – HyperWallet

Thursday, 16 May 2019 by yair Bendror

Introducing Hypermedia’s new service – “HyperWallet”

What is Hypermedia’s “HyperWallet” service, and how do I implement it to meet my needs.

Overview

In developing countries, banking services are rare to find. People who need an immediate access to cash to manage their physical transactions are in a continuous problem.

While many countries replaced the need for holding physical money with advanced digital transactions through the internet, some countries still suffer from partial to non-existent internet coverage.

Mobile Payments using USSD Transactions

Mobile Payments using USSD Transactions

For this problem, USSD transactions are a perfect solution. USSD transactions are mostly used in these countries to transfer air time (Vtu) and bandwidth balance (Data Plans) between people.

Another new development of USSD transaction is its usage as “Mobile Payment”.

Mobile Payment is a fairly new service and refers to payment services performed from a mobile device. Instead of paying with credit cards, cash or checks, the consumer can utilize his cellular phone to pay for purchasing goods or simply transferring money between people – in a variety of methods.

One method we would like to discuss here is USSD transactions. The implementation of USSD in this manner is quite simple. The sender sends a transaction order through USSD (for instance) by using the recipient’s number (and some more parameters) in the transaction order.

The “Mobile Payment” can be done by having the mobile device communicates with banking services, in what’s commonly called “Telephone Banking”. In this method the bank links accounts to a phone number as an identifying method.

Mobile Payments can also be done independently from the bank, such as in the popular “Orange Money” service. These services are referred to as “unbanked” or “underbanked”.

This transforms the cellular phone into an advanced electronic wallet and while some western countries are only now starting the foray into the field of electronic wallets, in these developing countries mobile payment and e-wallets have been a reality for many years.

Shortcomings of USSD transactions

Mobile Payments using USSD Transactions

For this problem, USSD transactions are a perfect solution. USSD transactions are mostly used in these countries to transfer air time (Vtu) and bandwidth balance (Data Plans) between people.

Another new development of USSD transaction is its usage as “Mobile Payment”.

This transforms the cellular phone into an advanced electronic wallet and while some western countries are only now starting the foray into the field of electronic wallets, in these developing countries mobile payment and e-wallets have been a reality for many years.

The solution – HyperWallet

And that’s exactly where Hypermedia’s “HyperWallet” comes in. Hypermedia developed an API that together with their SimBox solution can operate as an intermediary. HyperWallet can send massive amounts of transactions, receive the responses from the operators and knows how to sort the responses to a “Pass” or “Fail” HTML output and associate them with the correct transaction.

HyperWallet can work with multiple protocols, such as USSD, STK and SMS and its major advantage is that it selects the right SIM for each transaction. If transferring air time to a specific client is cheaper through one operator, it will automatically choose the right SIM for that purpose. If transferring money is easier, faster or cheaper from a specific bank account (linked to a specific SIM) HyperWallet will route the transaction to the right SIM, send the code correctly and sort the feedback to a “Pass” or “Fail” while associating it with the original USSD transaction.

This service also opens many opportunities for small businesses to make their own transactions not having to rely on an intermediary agency. Many operators won’t deal with small businesses, since they do not meet the minimum threshold amount of transactions, and as a result refer them to some intermediary agency who will also take a cut.

From now on, it doesn’t matter how big you are or how many transactions you perform, HyperMedia’s HyperWallet will let you deal directly with the operator, saving time, money and hassle.

HyperWallet features and limitations

For clarification, HyperWallet is not a complete product on its own. It serves as a vital component in any system as a USSD convertor (Pull only), which also outputs simple HTML responses. This product allows its implementation into any existing setup easily. It comes with an enhanced API, consisting of an enriched set of commands programmed into the SIM, to create an interactive exchange between the network and the end user smoothly and transparently.

HyperWallet API is a JSON-based comprehensive utility which easily enables implementation of applications for the SIM cards in your Hypermedia’s SimBox.

Some examples for implementations of Hypermedia’s HyperWallet:

  • A local kiosk selling airtime (Vtu) and bandwidth (Data Plans). With HyperWallet you can buy and sell airtime (A2C) from customers with a click of a button and full automation. The HyperWallet will automatically choose the right SIM depending in the client’s number.
  • Local businesses can charge and receive money easily and get the reference number (transaction ID) for confirmation and full integration with most modern CRM systems.
  • Local change offices can receive money in variety of ways, PayPal, wire transfer and many other electronic solutions, and after clearing the transfer, automatically send the amount received to a client’s cellular phone (and vice versa) – transforming HyperWallet into a complete Clearing System.
  • An employer can pay salaries in a bulk payment. Instead of typing each transaction manually you can do it with a click of a button.

This solution provides a reliable and secure alternative to external services, providing your business with a powerful set of integration abilities.

Transactions supported:

  • Money Transfers like M-PESA Deposit / Withdraw (cash in/out)
  • Bill Payments like GoTV, DsTV, StarTimes, Smile, Spectranet, Electricity bills
  • Bulk Payments (E.G.: salaries)
  • Airtime transfer / Airtime Top-Up (Vtu)

How to Send Bulk SMS

Monday, 13 May 2019 by yanivsharon

Let’s all come to terms that we are becoming a full-time mobile-integrated society. Everyone in the whole world is aware of what text messaging is, and what other way to reach out to people if you were a business? Businesses are quickly getting in line with changing times and are now adopting the use of text messages to reach out to customers. It is a more cost-effective and straightforward way of reaching out to thousands, if not millions of customers. Surprisingly, even though these texts are sent in bulk, they can be personalized for urgency purposes.

Bulk SMS

Bulk SMS, bulk messaging, or bulk text messaging is transferring SMS messages in large amounts to other phone terminals of a predetermined group of recipients. Bulk messaging is used by huge corporations, banks, consumer brands, and media companies. Often, this method of messaging is used for mobile marketing, organizations and the entertainment industry.

Banks use bulk SMS for fraud control in case any criminals are circulating fake emails by asking bank users for their sensitive information. Bulk SMS can alert the users of the scam and not fall victim in the end.

How SMS Gateways Work

SMS Gateway device providers have unique provisions with major mobile carriers all around the world to send two-way SMS traffic. These gateway providers (SMS aggregators) send and receive SMS traffic to and from the SMSC of the mobile phone’s network. The aggregators then receive a follow-up of the delivery of the messages.

SMS aggregators are basically SMS gateway providers who have arrangements with huge mobile network providers to send and receive messages through SMS centres.

Direct-to-mobile gateway enables text messages to be sent or received by email through software applications by acquiring a SIM card. Direct-to-mobile gateway differs from SMS aggregators as they are installed on an organization’s own network and connected to a local mobile network.

This is done by acquiring a local SIM card from the local operators and installing it in the gateway.

An SMS Centre (SMSC) handles the passing of text messages for major telecom carriers. All SMS messages are sent from a mobile phone reach the SMSC to regulate the whole process. The SMSC then forwards the message to the recipient, unless the recipient is off, then it will be stored until they get back on.

Bulk SMS Software

Software has to be used to send and receive bulk messages. There are many types of software packages designed for this platform. Software company packages give users the ability to send messages to as many phone numbers as possible.

A wide majority of software applications are made to be used with SMS that enables the user to upload mobile phone number lists with the use of CSV or TXT file. More advanced systems can delete any repetitive numbers automatically. Other advanced systems are programed to authorize all the numbers before the messages are sent.

Personalising your SMS messages goes beyond addressing your customers by name. It’s all about communicating to individual customers with fields that are unique to them. Personalising your SMS could be the move that gets you to the next level from being a brand to being a brand that people can count on.

Other established software features are designed to enable users schedule messages to be delivered on strategic days and time. Bulk messages can also be sent on national or international mobile networks as long as the provider uses an international platform.

Who Uses Bulk Messaging?

Bulk messaging is used by enterprise firms (both corporates and SMEs), political base, schools, research firms, commercial institutions, clubs and their members, freelance marketers, banks, government institutions, and others. SMS Messaging (Short Messaging Service Messaging) enhances customer engagement, market products and services, and pass on urgent alerts and notifications to subscribers.

With the advent accessibility of billions of people in the world to SMS-capable smartphones, many businesses now have the chance to extend their reach through bulk messaging.

How Is Bulk Messaging Used?

With this very effective communication tool, SMS messaging offers businesses looking to pass important information with various advantages. Here are four realistic ways in which bulk SMS messaging is incorporated:

  1. Digital Money Transfer

Using a digital money transfer provider enables users to send money, pay bills, and reload mobile tariffs for family and business colleagues all over the world. With the use of bulk SMS, the mobile transfer provider can send a real-time transaction update to both the sender and recipient.

  1. Retailers

International retailers such as Walmart send bulk SMS messages to all its customers notifying them of daily discounts – which are redeemable for a certain period of time. Instead of shouting to the customers in the store, it is a better alternative which improves customer turnout by offering them better incentives.

Bulk SMS Messaging Improved With Clouding

There’s a lot to look into when using a mass notification solution within your customer management software. Integrating your communication program and mass texting as a customer service initiative or marketing tool demands specialized software. To deliver the best customer experience, using cloud communication APIs to send SMS messages is a better solution. Here’s why you should engage in bulk SMS messaging with a trusted cloud service provider:

  1. Global Access

A dependable global carrier network is one reason businesses turn to cloud providers. Reliable cloud providers have reputable relationships with worldwide telecom providers that have experience relaying billions of messages worldwide. Cloud providers also offer multiple routes to major carrier networks which helps deliver messages in the required timeframe.

  1. Flexible Pricing

Cloud providers offer package deals that change as your business needs grow over time. There are cloud providers who offer flexible pricing models that accommodate the exact amount of messages being sent, and nothing more than that.

  1. Diverse Software Features

Cloud providers also offer more than just bulk messaging. Instead of just sending word texts, there are better ways of sending MMS (Multimedia Message Services). This allows you to be more inventive and picturesque in marketing.

Conclusion

Personalization is the secret to building customer loyalty. The tools to build customer relationship are right in front of you. SMS bulking is one way to bring customers closer and get them more engaged.

The Best SMS Gateway

Friday, 12 April 2019 by Oded Stern

The Best SMS Gateway

An SMS Gateway is an appliance that allows its users to send SMS messages, from either a web browser or some other form of API, to a cellular network and can also serve as an international gateway for users with roaming capabilities, which enables SMS communication beyond the home network.

SMS gateways can eliminate problems arising from the fact that different wireless providers offer a variety of branded/proprietary communication protocols. E.g.: Nokia has an SMSC protocol known as CIMD, while CMG has its own protocol called EMI. It is impossible to connect two SMSCs if they do not support the same SMSC protocol. This is where an SMS Gateway comes in by being placed between two SMSCs to tackle this problem. The gateway acts as a transferring agent and seamlessly transitions from one protocol to another. All that needs to be done is modify the settings of the SMS Gateway. A source code change is not even necessary. Using the hypermedia HG-7000 will shorten the development time of the application’s SMS text messaging.

To connect to an SMS gateway, you can use an SMSC protocol such as SMPP or CIMD and some SMS gateways support an HTTP/HTTPS interface which makes it easier to use SMSC protocols, however, there are fewer SMS gateway features to use because some may not support sending pictures using an HTTP/HTTPS interface.

Other than using a direct connection to an SMSC’s wireless carrier, one can receive and send text messages on a computer by using a mobile phone or GSM/GPRS modem. Your SMS text messaging application has to establish communication with the mobile phone or GSM/GPRS modem utilizing AT commands.

Open Source SMS Gateway Software

An SMS Gateway has a lot of functions in the messaging system. It can be very complex and expensive, but fortunately, there are free open source SMS gateway software packages that can be downloaded over the web.
